Is there a source available on the internet that could explain the correct way to enter a combination and also tell me how many numbers are in the combination.

We found this old safe in a house we were cleaning out. We don't know anything about it, and would love to find out more, as well as an approximate value (or where I could go in the Austin, TX area to have appraised). The only marks I can see on the safe are the name of the company (Herring Hall Marvin Safe Co). And then under it i can see some numbers beginning with 194. I don't know if this is the beginning of a date from the 1940's or a part of a serial number or what? Any information you can provide would be great!

The old safe value depends on its type, condition, and rarity, but the real challenge is finding a way how to date an antique safe. The first step is to determine the manufacturer. Then, you should check any atypical and unusual features that set it apart from other models and is characteristic of a specific period.

Sometimes, people kept their valuables inside the safes installed under the garage or basement floor. You could find two types, with a round or rectangular door, but both models came with a lifting handle. Even though they were considered an excellent option, these safes could be impractical and challenging to use.

If your safe has an electronic lock, the safe serial number or the serial number of the electronic safe lock itself, can be used to see if there is a master override code for the safe. Entering the override code will reset the electronic lock so that the locks default combination will work.

If you have not been able to determine the model and serial number, a locksmith can still drill the safe to get in, and repair it after it is drilled, so that it functions like new but it will be more costly. Typically it a pilot hole will be drilled and the safe scoped to determine where the drill point is. Without a drill point, sometimes a security feature will be triggered on the safe, such as a re-locker, and more drilling will be required.

Finding the model for the safe can be a bit trickier. Most manufactures are placing model numbers on the back of the safe. So if your safe is bolted down or too heavy to move, you may not be able to find it.

If you cannot find the model number, but were lucky enough to find the serial number of the safe, your next step is to call the manufacture of the safe and give them the serial number, they will tell you what model it is from that number. 2ff7e9595c
